Future Buckeyes Flock

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio State University officials say shiny new facilities, including the $118 million student union that opened earlier this year, may have attracted a bumper crop of would-be Buckeyes.

The university says it fielded a record number of applications for this fall's freshman class, up more than 25 percent from last year.

The new Ohio Union and other improvements may have helped to boost interest in Ohio State, which is one of the largest universities in the U.S, OSU officials say.

The number of students applying to the school jumped from about 21,200 in 2009 to 26,600 this year.

About 60 percent of the applicants were accepted.

From that group, the university says it expects to enroll roughly 6,600 freshmen, about as many as last year.

Ohio State's fall classes are scheduled to begin Sept. 22.
