Campus Shooter Due To Be Fired
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Personnel records show the OSU janitor who shot two supervisors, killing one of them before killing himself, early yesterday morning was going to be fired on Saturday.
University police say Nathaniel Brown, 51, (left) walked into the OSU Maintenance Building, 2000 Tuttle Park Place, just before 3:30 AM carrying two handguns and opened fire in an office area where about six co-workers were present, OSU Police Chief Paul Denton said.
"He simply entered the work area where he would normally come to work and the shooting began into an office are," Denton said.
Building services manager Larry Wallingford, 48, was killed and Henry Butler, a 60-year-old operations shift leader, was wounded before Brown shot himself, Denton said.
On a recording of the initial 911 call, logged at 3:32 AM, the caller is heard to tell the dispatcher, "He shot himself. They said he shot himself."
Brown was found in a garage bay by university police officers and was pronounced dead at OSU Medical Center.
"This incident appears to be work-related, that Nathaniel Brown had a poor performance evaluation and came back then to initiate this incident," Denton said.
University documents indicate Brown was cited for tardiness, sleeping on the job and an inability to follow instructions.
After a poor performance review completed by Wallingford on Feb. 6, Butler requested Brown by fired on Feb. 11 and Brown was notified March 2 that he would be terminated on March 13, according to records released by the university.
Brown spent five years in prison in 1970s and '80s for receiving stolen property but records show he lied about on his job application.
