COLUMBUS, Ohio - OSU officials say they are pleased with the response time of university police officers and their campus emergency alert system in the wake of a shooting that left two men, including the gunman, dead.
When Nathaniel Brown opened fire in an office area inside a maintenance building Tuesday morning, the first 911 call was received at 3:32:46 AM and officers arrived on the scene two minutes and one second later, university safety officials said.
Officers of the university's Special Response Team searched the building floor-by-floor to make sure that it was safe, Denton said.
"You never want to make an assumption at this point that there's only one individual involved," Denton said.
A text message was sent through the university's Buckeye Alert system at 4:07 AM and took about 15 minutes to reach all of the more than 25,000 subscribers, university Assistant Vice President for Security Vernon Baisden said.
"OSU Police Shooting near McCracken Power Plant. Suspect in custody. Avoid area. More details to come," the message read.
Baisden says he is "extremely satisfied" with the response time of police and emergency personnel and the Buckeye Alerts system.
Baisden said the university is reviewing its system for alerting students, faculty and staff of incidents on campus.
"We are in the process -- and it was before this incident -- of reviewing our notification mechanisms on a mass basis and so that assessment is continuing," Baisden said.
